Fighting a Traffic Violation Charge and Legal Counsel | Free ...

To make roads safer, traffic tickets are given to drivers who break traffic laws. Traffic laws broken can include speeding, impaired driving, illegal parking, etc. The traffic ticket will note the date to go to court to plead guilty or not guilty. For people who have been given a traffic ticket, there are occasions when it could be useful to fight the ticket.

There are reasons why you may select to challenge a traffic ticket in court. Such reasons can include: Police officer might not show up for the hearing and the case gets dismissed, try to get the charge or ticket dismissed, you may find a way to have your case plea bargained to a lesser charge, you may need to try to stop demerit points from being applied to your driving record, and you think the police officer made a mistake such as a malfunctioning speed measuring gadget. In such instances, it?s smart to hire a legal professional such as a criminal lawyer that specializes in traffic violation cases.

There are ways to find a good lawyer specializing in traffic laws. The legal services you select should have expertise with traffic cases. A legal professional such as Toronto criminal lawyer that specializes in this area of the regulation will be skilled, knowledgeable and understand traffic laws. A lawyer with insufficient experience will lessen the chance of a successful outcome. The criminal lawyer you select needs to be local because it means they know the traffic laws and the criminal system in your area. A criminal lawyer will know what the judges and lawyers and how the system works so there might be an increased chance of a successful outcome.

Looking online is a good way to find a lawyer that specializes in traffic violations. Their websites will list their years of expertise, education, success stories, etc. It is a quick and simple method to search out legal services focusing on traffic laws. It is at all times a good suggestion to check charges of legal professionals that specialize in traffic violation cases. Nevertheless, when you select a legal service with a low price, it does not mean they?re inefficient. It is better to have a quality and skilled criminal lawyer in traffic ticket violation cases rather than a high priced lawyer without expertise in traffic cases.

Most people find that getting a traffic ticket can be a real headache. With a traffic ticket, you can obtain a hefty fine, demerit points applied to your driving record, a big rise in auto insurance rates, loss of your license, and even go to jail. It may be beneficial to fight a traffic ticket to avoid such adverse penalties. For those who do choose to fight the ticket, it is vital to have a legal service that specializes in traffic tickets and traffic charges such as impaired driving as it increases the chance of a successful outcome.

Getting a speeding ticket on your driving record can have serious consequences. Find the right Toronto criminal lawyer and former police officers to help fight these tickets. Speeding tickets Mississauga

Eat your broccoli: Another mechanism discovered by which sulforaphane prevents cancer

ScienceDaily (Feb. 28, 2012) ? Researchers in the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University have discovered yet another reason why the "sulforaphane"compound in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables is so good for you -- it provides not just one, but two ways to prevent cancer through the complex mechanism of epigenetics.

Epigenetics, an increasing focus of research around the world, refers not just to our genetic code, but also to the way that diet, toxins and other forces can change which genes get activated, or "expressed." This can play a powerful role in everything from cancer to heart disease and other health issues.

Sulforaphane was identified years ago as one of the most critical compounds that provide much of the health benefits in cruciferous vegetables, and scientists also knew that a mechanism involved was histone deacetylases, or HDACs. This family of enzymes can interfere with the normal function of genes that suppress tumors.

HDAC inhibitors, such as sulforaphane, can help restore proper balance and prevent the development of cancer. This is one of the most promising areas of much cancer research. But the new OSU studies have found a second epigenetic mechanism, DNA methylation, which plays a similar role.

"It appears that DNA methylation and HDAC inhibition, both of which can be influenced by sulforaphane, work in concert with each other to maintain proper cell function," said Emily Ho, an associate professor in the Linus Pauling Institute and the OSU College of Public Health and Human Sciences. "They sort of work as partners and talk to each other."

This one-two punch, Ho said, is important to cell function and the control of cell division -- which, when disrupted, is a hallmark of cancer.

"Cancer is very complex and it's usually not just one thing that has gone wrong," Ho said. "It's increasingly clear that sulforaphane is a real multi-tasker. The more we find out about it, the more benefits it appears to have."

DNA methylation, Ho said, is a normal process of turning off genes, and it helps control what DNA material gets read as part of genetic communication within cells. In cancer that process gets mixed up. And of considerable interest to researchers is that these same disrupted processes appear to play a role in other neurodegenerative diseases, including cardiovascular disease, immune function, neurodegenerative disease and even aging.

The influence of sulforaphane on DNA methylation was explored by examining methylation of the gene cyclinD2.

This research, which was published in the journal Clinical Epigenetics, primarily studied the effect on prostate cancer cells. But the same processes are probably relevant to many other cancers as well, researchers said, including colon and breast cancer.

"With these processes, the key is balance," Ho said. "DNA methylation is a natural process, and when properly controlled is helpful. But when the balance gets mixed up it can cause havoc, and that's where some of these critical nutrients are involved. They help restore the balance."

Sulforaphane is particularly abundant in broccoli, but also found in other cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower and kale. Both laboratory and clinical studies have shown that higher intake of cruciferous vegetables can aid in cancer prevention.

The research was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the OSU Environmental Health Sciences Center.

Archos launches latest Honeycomb effort, the 70b Internet Tablet

Android Central

The world outside Barcelona goes on as normal it seems, and Archos have today launched their latest tablet, the 70b. The name won't impress you, but the price of this latest Honeycomb effort might. The 7-inch 70b is on sale at just $199.99.

While being aimed towards the lower end of the tablet market, it stills looks fairly capable. As with all the Gen 9 Archos Tablets, the full Google app suite is on board. A 7-inch 1024x600 screen sits atop a 1.2 GHz ARM processor. Onboard storage is only 8GB but a MicroSD card slot is present allowing for another 32GB should you desire. You also get a front facing camera, and as ever Archos devices are capable of decoding pretty much most video formats out there.

The 70b isn't likely to set the world on fire, but offers a full tablet experience at the same price point as the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet 8GB. Archos tablets have always been very media-centric, and maybe the best part -- the kickstand. Always a winner should you like to enjoy movies from your tablet.

Sony Xperia P hands-on (video)

Without revealing the rhyme or reason behind its seemingly arbitrary Xperia naming convention, Sony's newly minted Mobile Communications arm unveiled its middle ground NXT series entry, the P, at this evening's MWC event. Occupying a space firmly between the S and U, this 4-inch handset boasts a company first -- that WhiteMagic display tech -- while incorporating the better known hardware elements of its older stablemate. With that signature aluminum unibody design, transparent bar and NFC-capabilities, this Android handset is poised to usher a whole new crop of smartphone users into the company's wireless folds. We spent some up close and personal time with the unit, so click on past the break to see whether this phone suffers from middle child syndrome or truly shines on its own.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) vs Apple’s iPad 3: Which Tablet Will Steal the Show?

The much-awaited Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, 10.1-inch version, was announced Saturday ahead of the Mobile World Congress (MWC).

The device is an update to its Galaxy Tab flagship and would be running on Ice Cream Sandwich with Samsung's TouchWiz UI skin. The tablet has also got a nice feel to it - it's lightweight and slim. It is a definite competitor to drive away the market share of the much-rumored Apple iPad 3.

Well, iPad 3 has not even officially been announced, yet it is enjoying huge amounts of press attention owing to a series of "leaks" which have given the world a potential glimpse of what it has got to offer its fans.

Here is a comparison of the rumored features of Apple's iPad 3 and the confirmed features of Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1)

Operating System: iPad 3 is expected with the next generation iOS 5, which will host the multi-touch gesture technology. However, analyst and tech enthusiasts predict that Apple would introduce OS X Lion for the tablet since it will be powered by a quad-core processor. This will also include multitasking features, such as notifications, task-finishing, app-switching, location and background sound.

Like us on Facebook

Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) will run on Google's latest Android 4.0 operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich. It will feature a redesigned user interface with a new app gallery layout, embedded Google applications, a Face Unlock feature employed with a facial recognition software, and access to a wide variety of multimedia through Samsung Hub services.

Processor: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) would be powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor and the device would be loaded with its unique TouchWiz panel. The device will be rolled out in two variants - 16GB and 32GB - which would be expandable up to 32GB using a microSD card.

Meanwhile, rumor has it that Apple iPad 3 would boast a quad-core A6 chip to power but recently few "leaked images" suggest that the new tablet will have an A5X chip, contrary to the previous rumors which claimed iPad 3 will run on quad-core processor. Further, it is believed that iPad 3 offers no support for removable memory, following its preceding version.

Display: Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) would feature a 10.1-inch PLS TFT display with a resolution of WSVGA (1024x600pixels) and would offer a pixel density of 149ppi.

On the other hand, iPad 3 is expected to have a Retina Display. iPad 3 is also rumored to feature a 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS TFT with a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels, twice that of the iPad 2. Analysts predict a pixel density of around 170ppi too, which will put the device's display up there with the best of them in terms of sharpness.

Camera: It is the expected that iPad 3 will come with LED flash to support the camera. Also, it is expected to have a 5MP camera with 1080p or 720p video recording quality of 60 frames per second. According to speculations, the technology made by OmniVision will help reduce the size of the table by 20 percent.

In Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1), the cameras would be limited to 3MP with LED flash, autofocus, geo-tagging and 720P video capture. Moreover, it would feature a VGA on the front which would offer a high quality video calling as a result.

Size & Weight:? Even though the size of the new iPad 3 is expected to remain the same as iPad 2, the thickness of the new tablet could increase a little bit - only by 1 to 1.5 mm.

A back shell of iPad 3 was leaked from M.I.C. Gadget recently, suggesting the device will be thicker than its predecessor, and the edges will be rounded off gently. The thickness is designed to accommodate the purported Retina Display and a larger battery.

With Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1), the tablet's skinny dimensions are kept intact, with a profile of just 9.7mm and it weighs around 19.9 ounces. Further, the device is equipped with a 7,000 mAh battery (up from 4,000 on the 7.0), which will hopefully ensure stamina that's similar to its predecessor.

There is no official word from Apple on the release of iPad 3. If the new device offers such an escalation from its preceding device, then it would undoubtedly be the most powerful in the Tablet crowd.

However, Samsung can win the race with its low-budget price tag. Currently, the device will launch in the UK first and should be released around the world market soon after. The company has provided price tag information for Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Depending on the country, an 8GB Galaxy Tab 2 with WiFi-only will likely be priced between $420 and $460 whereas 3G units would be priced above $520. ?The company has not released any price points for the UK yet.

Further, Galaxy Tab 2 (10.1) would also offer 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity and 21Mbps HSPA+ connectivity, if one opts for the 3G model instead of WiFi. Adding on, the Galaxy Tab 2 will also be the first out of all Samsung mobile devices to feature its AllShare Play service, which enables users to stream media to their tablet from a PC, Samsung smartphone or cloud drive.

On the other hand, iCloud would be the hot word for iPad 3 users with which they can store photos, apps, calendars and access songs on iTunes without having them to store in the phone's memory.?

The Options For Methods Of Commercial Real Estate Buying

The process of buying and selling commercial real estate is a bit more tedious than dealing with other types of properties. Since there is so much more involved you have to be very mindful. Get some help if you need it so you will not end up getting the short end of the stick.

If you?re buying a piece of commercial real estate, make sure you investigate the immediate neighborhood. While you may like the property itself, consider that the neighborhood creates the ambiance that may affect your visitors or customers. Checking out the neighborhood keeps you aware of what you need to know and ensures that you are making a sound decision overall.

When investing in commercial real estate, a great tip is to attempt to increase your revenue. You can increase revenues by looking into whether you can increase the lease rate, what you can do to lower vacancy rates, whether you can add more leasable space, and whether you can gain more revenue streams from billboard leases.

If you are negotiating a commercial real estate lease, you should aim to have shorter lease terms. The reason for this is because with a shorter lease, you have less financial liability. In addition, you should aim to get an option to stay in the location longer, and set the rent amount ahead of time. Hop over to Look Here for smart information.

Be patient when commercial real estate sales take much longer than residential real estate to finalize. You should expect the commercial real estate process to be much slower. At every step in the process, from purchasing to renovating, it takes a bit more effort and time to complete. However, the eventual reward is worth your patience.

When investing in commercial real estate, a great tip is to attempt to decrease your expenses which will increase your earnings. You can decrease expenses by looking at the maintenance costs, management fees, etc. that can be reduced in some manner. Once you have done this, you must find a way to reduce them.

It is getting harder to rent apartments with a new generation of picky renters. A great way to get your apartment rented is by adding furniture. Adding furniture is a great incentive that really adds a personal touch to a home and makes the future tenant feel at home. Providing furniture will ensure that your apartment is rented in reasonable time.

Research and follow up is always the key. Remember, talk to your financial advisors and a title or deed officer. Since you will be purchasing a property for commercial uses it is always a good idea to have your legal representative be advised of each step or your process.

This week's PLoS Medicine reports on a comprehensive study that reveals that levels of the amino acid, homocysteine, have no significant effect on the risk of developing coronary heart disease. This concludes the ongoing argument of the previously suggested benefits of lowering homocysteine with folate acid. According to earlier studies, high blood levels of homocysteine might be a modifiable risk factor for coronary heart disease...

Shoreline Area News: Home Girls: Is there lasting value in ...

By Dona DeZube

When you?re spending thousands to remodel a kitchen or bath, you want those updates to last a while.

To help you get ahead of and sort out the kitchen and bathroom trends ? pity the last fool to install an avocado appliance in the 1970s ? HouseLogic went to this month?s trend central, the International Builder?s Show. Our takeaway: For gosh sake, enjoy your home; remodel so that you love where you live.

Still, with a couple of exceptions, these five kitchen and bath trends offer lasting value:

1. Kitchen cleanliness.

By clean, we?re talking design, not germs. Kitchens are going clean, contemporary, and horizontal (open shelves, long and horizontal pulls, thick countertops). Even in a classic kitchen, go with simple, flat cabinets rather than highly carved cabinet details, says designer MaryJo Camp of Design Camp, Denver, N.C.

HL tip: This is a trend to get on board with. A simple, tidy, fresh appearance will have broad appeal if you decide to sell.

2. Color is out.

This year, colors are cycling out, Camp says, except for black and white used together.

HL tip: Practically speaking, black and white are hard to keep looking good. Black kitchens show every scratch and white cabinets show every speck of dirt.?
Regardless, color is fickle; choose what?s best for your space.

3. Dark wood is where it?s at.

If you?ve had white cabinets, you know they show every speck of dirt, which can drive you crazy unless you have a cleaning fetish. Combine those white cabinets with another up-and-coming trend: dark wood. Or if your budget can handle the hit, go with specialty woods like mahogany or zebra wood that can make an island look like a piece of furniture.
HL tip: Alternatively, you could invest your money in more kitchen storage and functionality than trendy decorative elements that might not stand the test of time.

4. Appliances that blend in.

The more open our kitchens get, the more we want them to look like the rest of the house. That?s fueling a trend away from the big pro range and ginormous stainless-steel refrigerator and toward concealed, high-performance refrigerators and dishwashers. Induction cooktops, which use less electricity than electric cooktops, are growing in popularity, Camp said.

HL tip: When you buy appliances, look for the Energy Star label or go even deeper on energy performance ratings with Consortium of Energy Efficiency.

5. Ageless design gets easy.

What the Baby Boom wants, the Baby Boom gets. And Baby Boomers want to live in their homes forever. That?s led manufacturers to create DIY remodeling products with built-in universal design features ? like toilet paper roll holders strong enough to hold your weight as you arise from the throne.

If you wanted a no-threshold shower five years ago, you had to have it fabricated as a custom piece, said Mary Jo Peterson, a Brookfield, Conn., designer. Today, companies sell no-threshold shower kits with trench-style drains covered with grills so you can roll yourself right in.

HL tip: We love the trend to universal design-ready remodeling products. To get started, check out our four universal design product ideas from anti-scald valves and door handles.

Which of these trends will your incorporate into your remodeling plans? Do you worry about staying ahead of trends?

Blog Archive ? Spicy tips to Make your Business Presentations ...

22
Feb

Presentations are a business staple. In fact, they are second only to email as the most commonly used business tool, and an effective business presentation separates the extraordinary from the average. So what?s the difference between a standard presentation and a great one? And how do you go from a static one-way presentation that numbs your audience to something truly memorable? The secrets are simple.

Foundation for Effective Business Presentations

No need to start from scratch or reinvent the wheel when you can build on what already works. Ready-to-use, customizable presentations and themes help spark inspiration and save precious time.

Clear the Clutter

Beware the temptation of flamboyance and excess. Content is king, and clarity is key. All too often presentations are a seemingly endless cascade of text and bullet points. Instead, give your audience manageable 140-character nuggets that will be remembered and discussed long after the presentation wraps up. Create meaningful messages that inspire (rather than tire) audiences, leaving them fully informed but eager to learn more.

Strike up a Conversation

Presentations are too often speech-like rather than conversational- filled with talking heads and mundane slides that the audience has to work to figure out. Effective business presentations appeal to the senses, generate conversation, and fuel involvement.

Quick Tips to actively encourage participation and interaction:

. Incorporate multimedia elements, such as YouTube clips or voice-overs, to stimulate discussion
. Include polling questions to gather real-time feedback.
. Use social media to get your guests chatting about live or webcast presentations.
. Offer tweetable, compact sound-bites for key takeaways that guests can share.
. Include a #hashtag to encourage real-time, active discussion.
. Include a twitter feed directly into your presentation so guests can follow the conversation and contribute.

Keep it Spicy

Punch up dull presentation slides with interactive elements that will engage your audience. You have access to a virtual buffet of online presentation makers that allow you to easily include assets such as video, high-definition photos, audio, polls, real-time feeds, and more.

It Takes a Village

Why fly solo when collaboration can help you take your presentation from good to great. Use presentation programs that allow you to share and gather feedback in real time from colleagues, team members, key stakeholders, prospects, or customers. The interaction gets others invested and creates a discussion that can move you to the next stage- whether it?s closing a deal or creating deeper engagement with customers.

Feast The Eyes

Appealing to visual senses adds to the experience of effective business presentations. A slide accompanied by a relevant image is sometimes all that?s needed to make a powerful statement.

Quick tips for gaining the visual edge:

. Choose images that clearly convey key points and messages.
. Use images of people to connect emotionally with your audience and draw them into the presentation.
. Extend the visual impact with your choice of background and font type.
. Choose a single color palette, and use it consistently throughout your presentation.
. Enhance a plain title with a different font.

But do be careful not to go overboard with too many visual elements. There is such thing as too much of a good thing!

Go Deep or Go Home

Are you embracing the power of reviews? Guest feedback provides real-time information on what is working well and what needs to be addressed, so be sure to include interactive elements that allow them to voice their opinions and offer feedback. Deep analytics can provide unprecedented insight into what your guests liked, and what they sent back. The more you know.

Whether you are preparing presentations for a conference or for use as a sales tool, don?t settle for standard. Keep a few simple secrets on hand and you can prepare like a pro and transform your presentations from ordinary to great.

Life in the Slow Lane | The Boscov's Travel Blog

With inspiring ports of call, breathtaking scenery and a relaxed ambience?what?s not to love about river cruising?

??????????????? For those of us besieged by stressed-laden careers and complicated personal lives, enjoying what vacation time we have often means packing in as much nonstop fun and sightseeing as is humanly possible. Of course, the unfortunate downside of this is enough to leave even the best of us weighted down by the dreaded ?vacation hangover??that tired bummed out feeling you have upon returning home and there?s absolutely no motivation to assimilate back into the real world. It?s almost like you need another vacation just to recuperate from the one you just returned from.

??????????????? Somewhere back amidst the chaos of everyday life, the importance of getting away from it all seems to have lost a little of its purpose and spirit?particularly when it comes to unwinding and recharging our batteries. While you could ask your boss for a few extra days of R and R (good luck with that), a growing number of travelers are turning to river cruises as a way to enjoy more of their vacation time without the hassles tied to traditional getaways.

The Other Side of Cruising

??????????????? Unlike traditional ocean cruises with their larger-than-life ships and more limited itineraries, river cruising provides a completely different experience and takes you places only a river cruise ship can go. A river cruise offers a historic and tranquil backdrop on elegant floating hotels complete with excellent service and gourmet cuisine. This wonderful mode of discovery offers easygoing comfort and convenience because you only unpack once and are taken from one fascinating country to the next, creating memories that will last a lifetime, all at an unhurried pace. Best of all, there are a wide array of itineraries on many of the world?s most scenic rivers and waterways.

??????????????? Along the way you?ll have the opportunity to uncover treasures such as charming squares, magnificent cathedrals, and bustling marketplaces just a stroll away from the vessel. There is no waiting in long lines to get on or off the ship, and there are always amazing sites to explore?scenic vineyards, historic castles, or countless UNESCO World Heritage Sites?even from the comfort of your ship and stateroom via panoramic views.

??????????????? Comfortable and convenient, river cruises offer a greater variety of destinations than you could encounter any other way. You spend less time getting there and more time being there. It?s little wonder that river cruising is one of the fastest-growing segments of the travel industry.

Small Ships = Big Fun

??????????????? River cruise ships are necessarily smaller than ocean cruise ships, as they have to navigate the sometimes shallow and tricky waters of an inland waterway. Most river cruise ships generally accommodate between 100 and 200 people, although, some are even smaller. The ship?s motion on the water is quite different on a river compared to an ocean cruise, and is much less likely to bother anyone who may be prone to motion sickness as well.

??????????????? River ships truly afford you the opportunity to see more of the world, visiting intimate, ancient towns and villages that can never be reached by ocean going ships. Charming destinations like Amsterdam, Vienna, Budapest, Rouen, Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg, Prague, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Beijing, the Nile River, the Mekong River of Vietnam and many more can only be reached by a river cruise ship. For example, should you choose to take a river cruise in China you will glimpse great cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Kiev, Odessa and many others in addition to the extraordinary little villages and picturesque scenes that line China?s great rivers.

??????????????? River cruising can occur year round in most warm weather climates, but most cruise lines curtail their cruising from November to March. In northern climates the rivers freeze over in the winter, necessitating a shorter season that usually runs from April or May through October or November, depending on river conditions. Because river cruise ships hold fewer passengers and do not run as frequently as ocean cruise ships, accommodations tend to fill up rather quickly. Your best bet is to book your river cruise as early as possible to ensure your place on the ship. Be sure to contact your local Boscov?s Travel Specialist to help you find the perfect river cruise that fits your personal taste.

A Science Miniseries: The Big Story of Alcohol, Civilization and a Little Fungus

There is a little magic embodied in every bit of bread or cheese and every sip of beer and wine. ??That magic is microbial and, at least in the case of the bread, beer and wine, the microbe doing the magic is yeast, of a single species, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, what one might reasonably call civilization?s yeast, or at least the yeast at the heart of civilization-its slightly sour lollipop center.

We don?t think about yeast. We buy it in packets at the store. We add water and wait. It is a creature akin to the sea monkeys you can order in the back of magazines, a sort of cheap novelty. Yet, yeast has long been, if not the bread and butter, at least the bread, beer and wine of agricultural peoples (which is to say, nearly all of us). Yeast, in many ways, saved lives (though it also takes them) and may even have been part of the reason we began to farm in the first place.

In a series of six articles published on the Guest Blog, I considered the story of yeast.

On day 1, I began by considering the possibility that alcohol (and within it yeast) may have been one of the reason crops were first planted, in part because in times of contagious disease and polluted water supplies alcohol might have helped keep us healthy.

On day 2, I next considered new research on fruit flies suggesting fruit flies do use alcohol as medicine, just as our ancestors might have.

On day 3, I found that unknown to those studying the fruit flies, it turns out a separate literature has considered whether alcohol kills human pathogens and, in turn, influences our fate, whether historically or even today.

On day 4, I began to consider the wicked side of fungi such as yeast. In thinking about the story of alcohol and yeast, we tend to think about having tamed yeast, in order to meet our needs. But in other stories in nature, for example that of termite balls, animal societies seem more likely to be tricked by fungi than in control of them. ?Fungi, like humans, can have ill intent.

On day 5, I wrote about the other societies we tend to think of as farming, all of which we tend to say ?farm fungi.? ?But in each of these cases, including our own, ?it is just as reasonable to say the fungus is farming the animals.

On day 6, I concluded by considering what remains to be understood in the story of fungi, alcohol and humans. In the end, if we are to carve the story of our interactions on the cave wall, the fungi need to be there. They are among our most important partners. They may even be in control.

These articles form part of the bigger story I?ve lost myself in over the last year or so, a story of our interactions with other species. These interactions not only influence us, they make us who we are. Yeast has shaped humans and societies, just as worms, bacteria, lions and many other species have too. ?Sister Sledge said it best when she sang, ?we are family, all my microbes, worms, predators and me.? Well, she did not sing it just like that, ?but she should have.

In working hard on a story like this one, a story that has required hundreds of hours of work, lost sleep and dreams filled with writhing worms and dividing cells, one begins to wonder what the end is (or when it ends?). I can?t precisely explain why I find these species so fascinating or why I feel I need to write about them. I can?t help myself. But I think there is precedent to my wanderings.

Here, I?ll return to the caves I was able to visit this week, deep caves in which, more than ten thousand years ago our ancestors made art. A hundred years of research has concluded resolutely that it is unclear why the early peoples of Europe and elsewhere painted caves, carved bison sculptures or made small sculptures of voluptuous women. This art was not easy. ?The artists crawled into caves as deep as they could and painted what was meaningful in one way or another to them. They did so using fire for light. They did so when they could have been running around playing pin the spear-head on the mammoth. Why? Maybe it was magic. Maybe it was religion. Maybe they did not know why they were doing it either. They painted similar subjects again and again, in different forms and from different directions. They painted them because for whatever reason they ?needed to.? I can?t explain why they painted the caves and yet I get it. ?The species with which we coexist make us human. They are who we are and so maybe that is what the cave artists were after, images of who they were, a kind of self-portrait a confrontation in those dark corridors with their existence. They were bisons, mammoths, reindeer, lions, and magic. We are those same things and also, bacteria, yeast, wheat and worms and thousands of other species, species I want to record, if not on the cave wall, at least on paper, so we will know who they, and we, are.o they were.

Table of evolutionary contents: Here you can skip ahead or backward to the other chapters in the story of the other species in our daily lives, whether they bethe cow,?the chicken,?the hamster, bacteria (on Lady Gaga,?on feet,?in bathrooms,as influenced by antimicrobial wipes,?as probiotics,?in the appendix),?pigeons and urban gardens, house sparrows (to be published next week, stay tuned),?predators, diseases,?dust mites,?basement dwellers,?lice,?field mice,?viruses,??yeast, the fungus that produces?penicillin,?bedbugs,?houseflies, or something?more.

Credit Debt Counseling ? Tips to Eliminate Credit Card Debt ...

We?re hearing a lot about debt consolidation these days, because the state of the economy has entered a recession that is affecting millions, not only in America, but around the world. You?ve probably seen the advertisements on TV or heard them on radio and wondered what they are all about. Perhaps you?ve asked yourself if they could help in your particular situation. Consumers who are in a bind because of layoffs, medical bills, or the general economic downturn are seeking assistance from these companies to help them get out from under their crushing debt burdens, and eliminate credit card debt.

Many people who owe more than they can pay on a monthly basis are finding these debt consolidation programs to be a reasonable alternative to bankruptcy. Although bankruptcy is a valid option, and is sometimes the last and only hope for many people in dire financial straits, there are options other than starting over again from scratch.

Debt consolidators or settlement companies help you by combining all of your various debt payments into one credit account so that you are making a single payment every month. Some of them will also call and talk with your creditors to get them to lower your interest rates, which have probably skyrocketed if you are behind on payments, or to drop the late fees from your account.

This will result in lowering the overall total dollar amount that you owe, making it much easier to pay the credit card companies; whether you?re making one lump sum payment, or stretching the payments out, month to month. The way it works is that you bring in your paperwork showing your income and documenting your debts. You?ll also fill out an application, which states your financial situation, and the company?s representative will review it carefully.

They also often offer free credit debt counseling. Afterwards, they determine the options that are available for you. A representative will then explain what payment plans they can offer, and which program is best suited to your financial situation, based on the information you have given. There is a charge for these services. The costs usually include a monthly fee and an interest charge. These costs are rolled into the payment plan so there is no separate charge up front to worry about. You can set things up so that the single payment is automatically drafted out of your account on a certain day each month.

This is an added convenience for you, your creditors, and the settlement company. Some debt consolidators also offer credit counseling, but they are really different services. There are non-profit organizations that also offer credit counseling. Credit counselors help you make better decisions regarding spending and credit. They guide you in evaluating credit offers and the associated interest rates. The idea is to help you get your spending back on track and to avoid credit problems in the future. Consumers who are looking for solid, credible help with their debt problems will find that a settlement company offers a sensible solution.

New Hope For Open Source Textbooks

textbooksA college textbook can cost a staggering $200. Over four years of study, students can easily spend thousands of dollars on books on top of a hefty tuition. The situation is not much better in public elementary, middle and high schools, where taxpayers pick up the bill. California spends around $100 on every math and science book for its 2 million high school students, for example. But textbooks don?t have to be such a financial burden.

INTERRACIAL LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS PART 1 ? Craig Eisele ...

Interracial love runs the gamut?from being in an interracial marriage to raising biracial children or to simply reaching out to those from different racial backgrounds in a given community. Loving across racial lines continues to prove challenging, as racism?and thus opposition to interracial relationships?still exists. Learn how to celebrate interracial love and multiculturalism and strategies to counter hostility to interracial relationships.

Interracial romance is nothing new but still faces unique challenges. Learn about the history of interracial romance in the United States, its depiction in popular culture, how interracial couples have changed throughout the years and more.

Considering that anti-miscegenation laws (see definition below) ?remained on the books until the latter half of the 20th century, it?s no wonder that stigma continues to enshrine interracial unions. Are you involved in such a relationship or contemplating entering one? Then, read the tips below designed to help mixed couples navigate a society which isn?t always kind.

Interracial Relationships and Violence

A major reason interracial relationships continue to carry stigma is their association with violence. Although in early America, whites and Native Americans, Native Americans and blacks and blacks and whites openly procreated with one another, the introduction of institutionalized slavery changed the nature of such relationships entirely. The raping of African American women by plantation owners and other powerful whites during this period have cast an ugly shadow on relationships between black women and white men. On the flipside, African American men who so much as looked at a white women could be killed, and brutally so.

Author Mildred D. Taylor describes the fear that interracial relationships invoked in the black community in the Depression Era South in?Let the Circle Be Unbroken?(1981), a historical novel based on her family?s real-life experiences. When protagonist Cassie Logan?s cousin visits from the North to announce that he?s taken a white wife, the entire Logan family is aghast.

?Cousin Bud had separated himself from the rest of us?for white people were part of another world, distant strangers who ruled our lives and were better left alone,? Cassie thinks. ?When they entered our lives, they were to be treated courteously, but with aloofness, and sent away as quickly as possible. Besides for a black man to even look at a white woman was dangerous.?

This was no understatement, as the case of Emmett Till proves. While visiting Mississippi in 1955, the Chicago teen was murdered by a pair of white men for allegedly whistling at a white woman. Till?s murder sparked international outcry and motivated Americans of all races to join the?Civil Rights Movement.

The Fight for Interracial Marriage

Just three years after Emmett Till?s horrific murder, Virginians Mildred Jeter, an African American, married Richard Loving, a white man, in the District of Columbia. After returning to Virginia the Lovings were arrested for breaking the state?s anti-miscegenation laws but told the one-year prison sentence given to them would be dropped if they left Virginia and did not return as a couple for 25 years. But the Lovings violated this condition, returning to Virginia as a couple to visit family. When authorities discovered them, they were again arrested. This time they appealed the charges against them until their case made it to the?Supreme Court, which ruled in 1967 that anti-miscegenation laws violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

In addition to calling marriage a basic civil right, the Court stated, ?Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the State.?

During the height of the Civil Rights Movement, not only did laws change regarding interracial marriage but public views did as well. That the public was slowly embracing interracial unions is evidenced by the theatrical release of a 1967 film based entirely on an imminent interracial marriage, ?Guess Who?s Coming to Dinner?? To boot, by this time, the fight for civil rights had grown very integrated. Whites and blacks often fought for racial justice side-by-side, allowing interracial romance to bloom. In?Black, White and Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self?(2001), Rebecca Walker, daughter of African American novelist Alice Walker and Jewish lawyer Mel Leventhal, described the ethos that impelled her activist parents to marry.

?When they meet?my parents are idealists, they are social activists?they believe in the power of organized people working for change,? Walker wrote. ?In 1967, when my parents break all the rules and marry against laws that say they can?t, they say that an individual should not be bound to the wishes of their family, race, state, or country. They say that love is the tie that binds, and not blood.?

Interracial Relationships and Rebellion

When civil rights activists married, they not only challenged laws but sometimes their own families. Even someone who dates interracially today runs the risk of incurring the disapproval of friends and family. Such opposition to interracial relationships has been documented in American literature for centuries. Helen Hunt Jackson?s novel?Ramona?(1884) is a case in point. In it, a woman named Se?ora Moreno objects to her adoptive daughter Ramona?s impending marriage to a Temecula Indian man named Alessandro.

?You marry an Indian?? Se?ora Moreno exclaims. ?Never! Are you mad? I will never permit it.?

What?s astonishing about Se?ora Moreno?s objection is that Ramona is half-Indian herself. Still, Se?ora Moreno believes that Ramona is superior to a full-blooded Indian. Always an obedient girl, Ramona rebels for the first time when she chooses to marry Alessandro. She tells Se?ora Moreno that forbidding her to marry him is useless. ?The whole world cannot keep me from marrying Alessandro. I love him?,? she declares.

Are You Willing to Sacrifice?

Standing up like Ramona did requires strength. While it?s certainly not wise to allow narrow-minded family members to dictate your love life, ask yourself if you?re willing to be disowned, disinherited or otherwise mistreated to pursue an interracial relationship. If not, it?s best to find a mate of whom your family approves.

On the other hand, if you?re newly involved in such a relationship and only fear that your family may disapprove, consider having a sit-down conversation with your relatives about your interracial romance. Address any concerns they have about your new mate as calmly and clearly as possible. Of course, you may end up deciding to agree to disagree with your family about your relationship. Whatever you do, avoid springing your interracial romance on family members by unexpectedly inviting your new love to a family function. That could make things uncomfortable for both your family and your partner.

Examine Your Motives

When involved in an interracial relationship, it?s also important to examine your motives for entering such a union. Reconsider the relationship if rebellion is at the root of your decision to date across color lines. Relationship author Barbara DeAngelis states in her book? Are You the One for Me??(1992) that a person who consistently dates individuals with qualities diametrically opposed to those their family finds appropriate may be acting out against their parents. For example, DeAngelis describes a white Jewish woman named Brenda whose parents want her to find a white, Jewish, single, successful man. Instead, Brenda repeatedly chooses black, Christian men who are married or commitment-phobic and only sometimes professionally successful.

?The point here is not that relationships between people of different backgrounds don?t work. But if you have a pattern of choosing partners who not only don?t fulfill you but also upset your family, you are probably acting out of rebellion,? DeAngelis writes.

In addition to dealing with family disapproval, those involved in interracial relationships sometimes deal with disapproval from their greater racial community. You may be viewed as a?sellout??or a ?race traitor? for dating interracially. Some racial groups may approve of men dating interracially but not women or vice versa. In?Sula?(1973), author?Toni Morrison?describes this double standard.

?They said that Sula slept with white men. ?All minds were closed to her when that word was passed around. ?The fact that their own skin color was proof that it had happened in their families was no deterrent to their bile. Nor was the willingness of black men to lie in the beds of white women a consideration that might lead them toward tolerance.?

Dealing with Racial Fetishes

In today?s society, where interracial relationships are generally accepted, some people have developed what are known as racial fetishes. That is, they?re only interested in dating a particular racial group based on attributes they believe people from those groups embody. Chinese-American writer Kim Wong Keltner describes such fetishes in her novel? The Dim Sum of All Things?(2004) of which a young woman named Lindsey Owyang is protagonist.

?Although Lindsey was admittedly attracted to white boys, she?hated the idea of some pervert honing in on her because of her black hair, almond-shaped eyes, or any of the submissive, back-scrubbing fantasies her physical features might suggest to a large, clumsy mammal in tube socks.?

While Lindsey Owyang rightfully shies away from white men drawn to Asian women based on stereotypes, it?s equally important that she examine why she exclusively dates white men (which is revealed later). As the book progresses, the reader learns that Lindsey harbors considerable shame about being Chinese-American. She finds the customs, food and people largely repellent. But just as dating interracially based on stereotypes is objectionable, so is dating someone from another background because you suffer from?internalized racism. The individual you?re dating, not racial identity politics, should be your primary reason for entering an interracial relationship.

If it?s your partner and not you who exclusively dates interracially, ask probing questions to find out why. Have a full-on discussion about it. If your partner finds members of her own racial group unattractive that reveals much about how she views herself and other groups as well.

The Key to a Successful Relationship

Interracial relationships, as all relationships do, pose their fair share of problems. But the tensions that arise from loving cross racially can be overcome with good communication and by settling down with a partner who shares your principles. Common ethics and morals arguably prove more significant than common racial backgrounds in determining a couple?s success.

While Barbara DeAngelis acknowledges that interracial couples face serious difficulties, she?s also found, ?Couples who share similar values have a much greater chance of creating a happy, harmonious and lasting relationship.?

Definition:?Miscegenation refers to sexual relations between people from different racial groups. It stems from the Latin words ?miscere? and ?genus,? which mean ?to mix? and ?race,? respectively. Various American states prohibited miscegenation, also referred to as race-mixing, until the Supreme Court ruled in Loving v. Virginia that anti-miscegenation laws violated the 14th Amendment.

Pronunciation:?mis-sej-a-nation

Also Known As:?race-mixing

Common Misspellings:?miscegination, misegenation, micegenation

Examples:

Blacks and whites could not marry in early America because anti-miscegenation laws prohibited race-mixing.

LEAP Financial and 722 Redemption Funding Announce ...

San Diego, CA, and Cincinnati, OH ? ? LEAP Financial, an auto leasing company that serves consumers who have difficulty obtaining credit, and 722 Redemption Funding, a provider of vehicle financing solutions during bankruptcy, announced a partnership to offer redemption and replacement financing for customers filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy.? The U.S. Bankruptcy Code allows consumers to ?redeem? their vehicle by paying fair market value for the vehicle in one lump sum. Analysts estimate that more than 1.3 million consumers filed for bankruptcy during 2011.

Both 722 Redemption and LEAP Financial work closely with debtors and debtor attorneys to offer auto financing options for customers filing for bankruptcy.? This partnership leverages the strengths of both companies to help a larger number of customers maintain their vehicle during their bankruptcy filing.

?In a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, consumers have three options regarding their auto debt: reaffirm the debt, surrender the vehicle, or redeem the vehicle?, said Tim Condon, CEO of LEAP Financial.? ?If the debtor can afford to make the payment on their auto debt, it makes sense to consider a reaffirmation, paying the current lender the agreed terms of the auto debt.? Depending on the value of the vehicle, however, a better alternative could be to surrender or redeem the vehicle.? When filing bankruptcy, debtors should work with their attorneys to understand their options and ensure they pursue the right decision for their financial situation and vehicle. ?

?722 Redemption?s access to consumers and bankruptcy attorneys, combined with LEAP?s ability to finance credit-challenged customers, gives more debtors the ability to pursue their auto options. ?said Tim Condon, CEO of LEAP Financial.? ?We are excited to partner with 722 Redemption to serve these consumers.?

?Our partnership with LEAP gives us the opportunity to broaden our geographic reach and offer financing to consumers where we are not operating today,? said Brad Zappin, Chief Operating Officer, 722 Redemption Funding. ?In addition, it allows us to reach potential consumers who would not previously have been approved for financing.? This is great news for consumers and their attorneys who are considering alternatives for handling their auto debt during their bankruptcy proceedings.?

About LEAP Financial
LEAP, headquartered in San Diego, CA, is a vehicle leasing company serving consumers who have difficulty obtaining credit either keep their current vehicle or get another one.? The company?s unique product enables customers who are unable to qualify for traditional financing to lease a vehicle.? COMAYAGUA, Honduras ? Hector Daniel Martinez was asleep in a small metal bed, one of dozens stacked so high in a narrow barrack that they nearly touched the roof, when the flames started.

The fire raced above his head. The prisoners screamed.

"Rescue!" they cried. "Help!"

Martinez, 32 and a homicide suspect, ran toward the barrack's single entrance. The door was locked. Most of the other 135 prisoners in the room ran toward the other end, where there was a bathroom with water and sinks.

It turned out to be a fatal choice. Martinez survived. He was only one of 28 inside the barrack who did.

"One hundred and seven are dead," he said, his face conveying little emotion, as if a toll too difficult to believe.

In all, the fire at an overcrowded prison in Honduras killed 358 people, officials confirmed Wednesday, making it the world's deadliest prison fire in a century. The local governor said an inmate called her moments before the blaze and screamed that he was going to set the prison on fire.

Comayagua Gov. Paola Castro said she called the Red Cross and fire brigade immediately but firefighters said they were kept outside for half an hour by guards who fired their guns in the air, thinking they had a riot or a breakout on their hands.

As the investigation continued into the night, a group of prisoners remained guarded by officers inside the prison grounds. They described a chaotic scene as the fire broke out and quickly spread from one barrack to another, all filled with highly flammable curtains and mattresses.

When the fire was extinguished all that remained of several barracks were the brick exteriors, painted with murals of Jesus Christ, saints and Psalms. Inside, the metal cots, stacked four high and at least a dozen across, were charred and falling down.

At the end of each barrack was a bathroom with sinks and tubs. Wednesday evening, there were still numerous bodies inside several of the bathrooms.

In one large sink sat the bodies of two prisoners facing one another. Their remains were completely black.

Others were squished together, their bodies indistinguishable.

"In the other cells we found them in the same positions," said state prosecutor German Enamorado.

Selbim Adonay, 18, also a homicide suspect, said he was trapped behind the metal door leading inside his barrack, unable to do anything as the flames spread and prisoners screamed.

"We couldn't do anything because we were locked inside," Adonay said.

Martinez said dozens of the prisoners in his barrack rushed toward the bathroom at the other end, desperately seeking to escape the heat. The sinks and tubs were filled with water. Some may have tried climbing on top of one another to reach the roof, Enamorado said.

From the front entrance of the barrack, prisoners watched helplessly as the guard carrying the keys fled without opening them up.

"He threw the keys on the floor in panic," Martinez said, a dust mask hanging from his neck.

A prisoner who also served as a nurse picked them up and went from one barrack to another, opening them up and barely withstanding the flames, Martinez said.

But by that time, it was already too late.
